Cecilia Vega, the former 60 Minutes correspondent, has alleged that CBS News executives pressured her to add political bias to segments. Speaking at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference, Vega described a pattern of editorial interference that she had never experienced in her 25-year career. This revelation has sparked debate about media integrity and independence in major news organizations.
Vega's Allegations of Political Bias at CBS
According to Vega, the pressure was most evident during a segment on federal immigration operations in Minnesota, where two American citizens were fatally shot by ICE agents. She was instructed to include footage of protesters attacking ICE agents — footage that did not exist. Additionally, she was questioned for not interviewing JD Vance in a story about poverty in West Virginia, even though the piece focused on Trump administration cuts to Snap benefits.

Additional Incidents of Editorial Interference
Vega also reported being asked to include comments from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey suggesting local police should fight federal immigration agents, despite no evidence of such statements. These instances, she said, came from a place of misinformation or politics, not journalism. A CBS News spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Leadership Changes and the Role of Bari Weiss
Vega was fired from the network this spring. She expressed concern about the future of the flagship Sunday newsmagazine after Bari Weiss was appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News. Weiss, who has no background in broadcast news, previously founded the Free Press media startup. Her appointment, made by Paramount CEO David Ellison (a Trump ally), has raised questions about the direction of CBS News.
