The Mexico mayor Valentín Lavín Romero was shot dead in his town hall in Temoac, Morelos, just months after surviving a previous assassination attempt. This killing marks the 14th mayor murdered since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, highlighting the escalating violence targeting local officials in Mexico.
The Assassination and Its Context
On Wednesday, hitmen entered the municipal building in broad daylight, fatally shot Lavín Romero, and escaped on a motorbike. The attack occurred despite earlier security measures following a January incident where he was wounded at a petrol station. Authorities have not yet identified a motive or suspects, but the Morelos prosecutor’s office has vowed to exhaust all lines of investigation.

Since 2006, when President Felipe Calderón deployed the military against organized crime groups, nearly 100 mayors have been murdered in Mexico. The municipal level of government remains the least protected, making it a prime target for criminal groups seeking to control local territories and businesses.
Allegations and Background
Local media reported that Lavín Romero allegedly had ties to criminal groups. His mother-in-law, a former municipal treasurer, was arrested in September 2025 for alleged links to Los Aparicio and involvement in kidnappings. In March, an activist group demanded an investigation into the mayor’s alleged role in the murders of two activists, Samir Flores and Sandra Rosa Camacho Flores.
A banner appeared in Temoac in May, apparently from a criminal group, accusing Lavín Romero of protecting rivals and demanding compliance with their interests. This assassination occurs as Mexico’s federal government works to dismantle corruption networks between municipal authorities and organized crime.
