The Saudi Pro League enters a new season on Thursday, and while the era of ageing megastars is fading, big names like Cristiano Ronaldo still loom large. As the league shifts focus from splashy signings to sustainable growth, fans wonder what this means for the future of Saudi football.
Saudi Pro League 2025: A Transition Season
This season marks a pivotal moment for the Saudi Pro League. After spending nearly $1 billion in the summer of 2023 to attract global icons, the league is now prioritizing value and local talent development. The absence of Mohamed Salah—who chose to stay in Europe—signals a strategic pivot away from blockbuster acquisitions.

Instead, the league is doubling down on improving club infrastructure, youth academies, and competitive balance. The goal: to produce homegrown players who can elevate the Saudi national team on the world stage, not just import stars for commercial appeal.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Quest for 1,000 Goals
At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the league's biggest draw. With 102 goals in 107 league games for Al-Nassr, he is just 24 goals shy of the 1,000-career-goal milestone. This season, he is expected to reach that historic number, which could generate unprecedented global attention for the Saudi Pro League.
However, the league's leadership is cautious about over-relying on one player. They want to build a product that thrives beyond individual stardom, ensuring long-term sustainability and international credibility.
Impact of Big Spending on Local Talent
The influx of foreign stars has raised the overall quality of club football in Saudi Arabia, as evidenced by improved performances in Asian competitions. Yet, the national team has not reaped the same benefits. In the 2026 World Cup, Saudi Arabia exited early, prompting questions about the effectiveness of the investment.
One key issue: local players often struggle for playing time, especially in creative and goalkeeping positions, which are dominated by foreign signings. Only one Saudi player, right-back Saud Abdulhamid, currently plays in Europe, highlighting the gap between domestic and international standards.
Table: Saudi Pro League Spending vs. National Team Impact
| Season | Spending (USD) | National Team Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | $957 million | Asian Cup Quarterfinal |
| 2024-25 | $450 million | World Cup Group Stage Exit |
| 2025-26 | $300 million (projected) | World Cup Qualifiers Ongoing |
As the table shows, spending has decreased, but the focus is now on efficiency. The league is investing in coaching, sports science, and youth development to bridge the gap between club and country.
Key Takeaways from the New Season
- Ronaldo's 1,000th goal will be a major marketing moment, but the league is diversifying its appeal.
- Local talent development is now the top priority, with mandatory playing time for young Saudis.
- International broadcast deals continue to grow, but sustainability is key.
- Expect fewer marquee signings and more strategic, younger acquisitions.
