UK politics took a decisive turn as Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a review of the early prisoner release scheme under the new Sentencing Act. The policy, set to release hundreds of offenders beginning in September, has sparked debate over justice and public safety. Burnham emphasized that serious crime perpetrators will not benefit from early release, citing the case of PC Andrew Harper's killers.
Burnham's Review of Early Prisoner Release
The Prime Minister indicated that the review will scrutinize exemptions and eligibility criteria before implementation. Unlike previous emergency measures that released tens of thousands, the new law includes no exemptions for serious crimes, domestic abuse, or terrorism. Burnham stated that the main perpetrator in PC Andrew Harper's death "will not be subject to any early release," addressing public outrage.
