Canadian wildfires have razed two First Nations communities to the ground, with leaders saying they received no government alert or evacuation help. The fast-moving fires in Ontario forced nearly 2,000 people to flee, many by boat, as entire villages were destroyed.

First Nations Communities Left Without Warning

The Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, located north of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario, was engulfed by fire on June 15. About two dozen residents quickly boarded boats packed with possessions and raced across a nearby lake to safety. Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige of the Anishinabek Nation said: "If this community waited for a mandatory evacuation process, we’d be doing a recovery mission for the bodies of children, of elders, of men and women." Despite earlier inquiries to the federal government, the community was assured there was no imminent threat.

Ontario’s Response and Criticism

Ontario Premier Doug Ford traveled to Thunder Bay and stated the province would spend whatever was necessary to fight the fires. However, First Nations leaders accused Ford of being unclear about support and disorganized in coordinating with indigenous communities. The CBC has reported that additional alerts were not issued in time.
