Bilic Returns as Croatia Manager: Bravery and Belief Fuel Second Spell 2026

Slaven Bilic is back as Croatia manager, infusing the team with bravery and belief for his second spell. Nine years after declaring "I don't believe in comebacks," Bilic returns to lead Croatia against England in the Nations League, marking a remarkable full-circle moment in his coaching career.

The Unlikely Comeback of Slaven Bilic

In a 2015 interview, Bilic seemed adamant that his time with Croatia was over. "I have nice memories and wouldn't want to spoil them," he said, adding, "I don't like coming back." Yet, 14 years after his first spell ended, Bilic has answered Croatia's call once more. His return comes after a tumultuous period in Croatian football, with the team seeking stability and inspiration.

Bilic's journey since then has been eventful: stints at West Ham, Al-Ittihad, and Watford, each adding to his managerial portfolio. But Croatia remained a special chapter, and now he's ready to write a new one.

Why Bravery and Belief Matter for Croatia

Bilic's managerial philosophy centers on bravery and belief. He encourages players to express themselves and take risks, a style that resonated during his first tenure from 2006 to 2012. Under his leadership, Croatia reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 and developed a reputation for fearless football.

Now, with Croatia facing England in Rijeka, Bilic's approach will be tested. England, with their star-studded squad, pose a formidable challenge. But Bilic's belief in his players could be the catalyst for an upset.
