Channel 4's Apocalypse reality show takes survival to a new level in rural Indiana. I had no shame confessing that I'd be a crap companion during the apocalypse. My practical skills are limited, I'd be a right Debbie Downer and I don't respond well to sharing food. Still, last November, two survival experts spent a morning making a valiant effort to prepare me for Armageddon deep in the rural Indiana countryside.

I had ventured to the US midwest to see the making of Apocalypse, an ambitious new Channel 4 reality series: an eight-parter following 16 people attempting to sustain themselves after an unexplained catastrophe from which only they appear to have survived. I was to experience the abridged version: my training only lasted a couple of hours, whereas the real participants will get three days of prep. They'll then have to endure a month in the doomsday simulation. I only had to muddle on until dinnertime.

The Making of Channel 4's Apocalypse

After an hour spent in a gravel-pit junkyard, I could (theoretically) build a shower and make a torch with scavenged items. I'd learned how to open a tin of pilchards sans can opener (thwack it on concrete) and to start a fire without a lighter or matches (twigs, maybe?). Induction over, I was blindfolded and bundled into a minivan. We stopped, and I was shoved out, just as the show's participants would be. As I peeled off my mask, I saw for the first time the extraordinary location in which Apocalypse is set: a thousand-acre abandoned town comprising hundreds of buildings, from houses to a hospital, all left to decay.

The scale of the set is immense. Participants must scavenge for food, water, and shelter while navigating the eerie empty streets. The show's producers have crafted a realistic post-apocalyptic world, complete with abandoned vehicles and overgrown vegetation. It's a far cry from the typical reality TV challenges.

Survival Training Insights

My training was intense but brief. The survival experts taught me essential skills like fire-making, shelter-building, and food procurement. However, mastering these in just a few hours is nearly impossible. The real participants get three days of prep, which includes more advanced techniques and psychological conditioning. They'll need every bit of that training to last a month in the simulation.

One of the most challenging aspects is the isolation. With no contact with the outside world, participants must rely solely on their group dynamics. The show tests not only physical endurance but also mental resilience. Arguments and alliances will likely form, adding drama to the survival experience.

What to Expect from the Series

Apocalypse promises to be a gripping watch. The combination of survival challenges and human drama is a proven formula. Channel 4 has a history of producing thought-provoking reality shows, and this one seems poised to join that legacy. Viewers can expect to see the participants struggle, adapt, and perhaps thrive in this artificial doomsday scenario.

The series will also raise questions about human nature and societal collapse. How do people behave when stripped of modern conveniences? The show might offer some insights, albeit in a controlled environment.
