Kennedy Center Honors Moves to Capital One Arena in 2025 2026

The Kennedy Center Honors will take place away from its traditional home this year for the first time in its history, as the iconic John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts remains in jeopardy amid Donald Trump's ongoing battle to have it named after himself. The Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., is now set to host the ceremony on December 7, a Kennedy Center spokesperson said.

Kennedy Center Honors 2025: A Historic Venue Change

The list of honorees this year has not yet been announced. The ceremony has been staged in the Kennedy Center's Opera House each year since the awards began in 1978. This move marks a significant departure from tradition and highlights the escalating tensions surrounding the landmark.

The change came as the Trump administration faces challenges in Congress and the courts over its plans for the Washington landmark, including the possibility of demolishing it. The Kennedy Center Honors is widely regarded as one of the leading U.S. distinctions recognizing achievement in the performing arts.

Legal and Political Challenges

Last month, Christopher Cooper, a U.S. district judge, directed the Trump administration to give at least 30 days' notice before taking any action toward tearing down the building. Earlier this week, Republican senator Mike Lee blocked a bipartisan bill that would have prevented Trump from demolishing the Kennedy Center without the approval of Congress.

Trump addressed the future of the center while speaking with reporters last month, threatening to tear the whole facility down. The center had abruptly closed for renovations, following cratering public support and ongoing controversy.

Impact on the Performing Arts Community

The Kennedy Center Honors has long been a pinnacle event for artists, celebrating lifetime achievements in music, dance, theater, opera, and film. The move to Capital One Arena, a sports and entertainment venue, raises questions about the prestige and intimacy of the ceremony.

Industry experts worry that the change could diminish the honor's significance. However, supporters argue that the show must go on, and the new venue ensures the tradition continues despite political turmoil.
