Martin McDonagh has sparked controversy at the Venice Film Festival by denouncing the CIA for committing 'awful things all around the world.' His new film, Wild Horse Nine, explores the agency's dark history, from the Chilean coup to the assassination of JFK.
The Oscar-tipped director, known for The Banshees of Inisherin, used the premiere to call for greater scrutiny of US intelligence operations. 'We know what the KGB are like, but we probably don't question the CIA's activity as much as we ought to,' McDonagh told reporters.

Wild Horse Nine: A Critical Look at CIA History
Set in 1973, the film stars John Malkovich as Chris, a CIA agent stationed in Santiago, Chile, during the US-supported coup against President Salvador Allende. Diagnosed with cancer, Chris is sent to Easter Island with his protégé, played by Sam Rockwell, where he reflects on his involvement in other interventions, including the 1954 Guatemalan coup and the 1961 assassination of Congo's Patrice Lumumba. The film also suggests CIA involvement in the Kennedy assassination.
McDonagh said the film aims to highlight truths that are 'not talked about enough.' The director's critique comes amid renewed debates over US foreign policy and covert operations.
Why McDonagh's Statements Matter
His comments resonate with a growing public interest in historical accountability. Recent declassified documents have fueled discussions about CIA activities, and McDonagh's platform at Venice brings these issues to a mainstream audience.
'I've been very interested in the truth of what the CIA has been doing over the last 60 years,' he said, emphasizing the need to question US actions as rigorously as those of other nations.
Comparing CIA and KGB Operations
| Agency | Known Interventions | Public Scrutiny |
