Monsters of God Review: Reptile Smuggling Feud Gets Tiger King 2026

Monsters of God review reveals a messy feud between rival reptile smugglers that gets the Tiger King treatment, making it a must-watch for true crime and wildlife documentary fans. This HBO and A24 co-production, directed by Eric Goode, dives deep into the illegal reptile trade, featuring larger-than-life characters and shocking revelations.

What Is Monsters of God About?

Based on Bryan Christy’s 2008 book The Lizard King, the series focuses on the US-centered but globally connected illegal reptile trade. It centers on two men—Hank Molt and Tommy Crutchfield—who are credited with kickstarting the black market for rare lizards and snakes. Their bitter rivalry mirrors the infamous Joe Exotic vs. Carole Baskin feud, complete with personal attacks and wild accusations.

The Feud Between Hank and Tommy

Hank and Tommy’s animosity is palpable. Tommy claims Hank “will turn anything good into bad,” while Hank calls Tommy “one of the angriest and most bitter people I’ve ever met.” Their backstories are equally bizarre: Hank was once a mayonnaise salesman, and Tommy worked at a Florida reptile attraction called Snake-a-Torium, where he later held his wedding reception.

Why It Feels Like Tiger King

Eric Goode, who produced and co-directed Tiger King, brings the same formula: eccentric personalities, criminal undertones, and a touch of absurdity. The series includes smugglers, underworld crime gangs, and even legitimate zoos accused of turning a blind eye to the provenance of their reptiles. The result is a gripping, sometimes messy, narrative that keeps viewers hooked.

Key Differences from Tiger King

While Tiger King focused on big cats, Monsters of God zooms in on reptile smuggling, a trade that is more discreet but equally destructive. The documentary also explores the global supply chain, from Florida to international markets, and the environmental impact of poaching rare species.

Key Takeaways from the Series

• Illegal reptile trade is a multi-billion dollar industry with devastating ecological consequences.
• The documentary exposes how smugglers exploit legal loopholes and corrupt officials.
• Hank and Tommy’s feud is as personal and petty as any reality TV drama.
• Eric Goode continues his knack for finding outrageous true stories.
• The series raises awareness about wildlife trafficking and conservation efforts.

Is Monsters of God Worth Watching?

If you enjoyed Tiger King or Chimp Crazy, this is a natural next binge. It’s messy, entertaining, and occasionally infuriating, but it sheds light on a hidden world. The production quality is high, with interviews and archival footage that keep the pace brisk. However, some critics note that the series lacks focus, jumping between too many characters.

In conclusion, Monsters of God is a wild ride that will appeal to fans of true crime and animal documentaries. It’s not perfect, but it’s compelling and thought-provoking. Whether you’re interested in the reptile trade or just love a good feud, this series delivers.
