France recorded more than 5,700 excess deaths during its June heatwave, according to health authorities. The unprecedented toll highlights the growing danger of extreme heat events linked to climate change.
Heatwave Death Toll in France: June 2023 vs. 2022
The French national health agency reported 5,764 excess deaths between 17 June and 2 July 2023, an excess mortality rate of 36%. More than half occurred in just three days (25–27 June), with those aged 75 and older accounting for two-thirds of fatalities.

Wider European Context: Wildfires and Record Temperatures
While France endured its heatwave, Spain battled one of the largest wildfires in its history, burning approximately 32,000 hectares in Guadalajara. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez noted that Spain had already suffered 22 major wildfires in 2023—four times the previous year’s count—with over 100,000 hectares burned. He urged the public to “not trivialise the climate emergency.”
Key Takeaways from the June Heatwave
- Over 5,700 excess deaths in France during the 16-day heatwave.
- Elderly individuals (75+) comprised about 66% of fatalities.
- Spain experienced 22 major wildfires by mid-2023, quadruple the 2022 figure.
- Southern Europe faces rising temperatures of 42–44°C, increasing fire risk.
- Scientists confirm human-driven climate change is intensifying extreme weather events.
What You Can Do to Stay Safe During a Heatwave
Extreme heat poses serious health risks, especially for seniors and those with pre-existing conditions. Stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak sun hours, and use fans or air conditioning. Check on elderly neighbours and relatives.
FAQ
What caused the excess deaths in France during the June heatwave?
The deaths were attributed to “all causes” and not directly linked to heat in official reports, but extreme temperatures are known to exacerbate cardiovascular, respiratory, and other chronic conditions. The rapid onset of heat stress likely overwhelmed vulnerable populations.
How does the 2023 heatwave compare to previous years in France?
The 2023 June heatwave caused 5,764 excess deaths, slightly more than the 5,722 excess deaths recorded over the entire summer of 2022. The concentration of deaths in just a few days made it unprecedented.
Is climate change making heatwaves more deadly?
Yes. Europe is the fastest-warming continent, and scientists say human-driven climate change increases the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves, leading to higher mortality and wildfire risks.
The June 2023 heatwave is a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate adaptation and public health preparedness. Stay informed through reliable sources like GrandGoldman, and take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
