An Amazing Backyard Path, whether your backyard is just a sandbox for a pet or a romping ground for a child. Sometimes it is a place of tranquility that helps release your tensions after a long day at work. Whatever use is made of their backyard, most people do more with it than let it be a mowing field.

My wife and I live next to a park adjacent to our back fence. There are times when the weather makes the backyard less desirable for walking. With a small child and frequent visits to the park, we decided to build a walkway.

A path is a great way to add value, both aesthetically and financially. But it's your backyard. Don't build a path that you hate, will regret, or that doesn't make sense to you. Now let's talk about what you'll need.

Step 1: Tools and materials

No matter what style of driveway you build, you'll want the following:

• Trolley
• Shovel
• Gardener shovel
• Gloves
• Nylon Braiding
• Stake
• Tamper

Depending on the type of gateway you need:

• Hammer
• Wood for shapes, i.e. 2×4
• Concrete
• Shovel, landscapers
• Compactor for surface area

Step 2: Start planning

You can choose to do this randomly, but chances are you'll get frustrated and end up scrapping much of your project to fix the errors.

Take some time to review the current stone types, patterns and designs currently available on the market. Review. So get out a piece of paper, a pencil, and a tape measure.

First, design your backyard. Significant items should be included, fences, gates, patios, ponds, trees, etc.

Once you have a design, start dreaming about what your path will look like. Sometimes a physical design can help you visualize this. For example, if you are making a curved path, use a garden hose to represent the edge of the path. If you're using garden stones, get some cardboard and cut out some shapes.

Step 3: It's time to pass the point of no return

Now that you have established your idea, understand the materials needed, and have a plan of attack, GET STARTED.
I started by excavating the ground where I was going to place the walkway.

LESSON LEARNED: Designate a location in advance for the excavated dirt. Lay out a tarp to place the soil, find a neighbor who needs it, build a berm somewhere else in your yard. I now have a very uneven backyard as a result.

Lesson learned: The actual leveling of the excavation at this point is relatively unimportant. You just need to be close. I spent too much time trying to make the level lower and perfectly flat.

Step 4: Rocks, paper, scissors...

Now that the ground is excavated, bring the rock.

A local gravel pit was 3/4 limestone, which is perfect for this application. You need a rock substrate that sticks together. Pebble gravel, pebbles or anything else with smooth edges and surfaces will never pack together to give you a solid base.

As you spread the rock, now is the time to make sure the top surface is as level as possible or has an appropriate slope. I chose a 1/4 inch drop on one side of my path so I wouldn't have standing water on the path.

An 8 in square Tamper is a useful tool for compacting gravel. If you have access to a sand dish, I would recommend using it to tamp down the gravel.

Step 5: Edges and sand

Paving edgers are essential to ensure thate the route stays online. Basically, there are two types of edgers: fixed and flexible.
Fixed edgers are useful for my particular application, but for more artistic applications, flexible edgers are appropriate.

Use 12″ long, 0.5 diameter nails to stake the centerboards to the ground.

Once the edgers are staked, add sand to the route location.

Using a straight edge like a level or a long 2x4 cut, place your sand at the desired height, about 1″ thick.

Step 6: Pave!

Start your pattern where it makes sense. For example, if you are using a pattern that can start on one side and work toward the other, start on one side.

If your pattern depends on a centered feature, work from that feature. This can be difficult to do, considering that you will constantly have to work your litter.

When placing the stones, use a heavy rubber mallet or place a piece of wood against the stones to impact the stones to keep the pattern tight.

Step 7: Completion

Once the stones have been placed and you are satisfied with the rigidity of the pattern, you are ready to add polymeric sand and compact the path. Polymeric sand is used to bond stones together after the sand becomes wet.

Spread the sand over the stones and slide it into the cracks between the stones. After you have worked the sand into the cracks, use a sand plate compactor to compact the sand into the joints.

A thicker layer of sand will work better than a thinner layer. Move the sand plate along the path and continue adding sand as needed. Once the path has settled and is level, sweep excess sand from the path.

Block the path by applying a light mist of water to the surface. That's all!
