A Carpenter's Workbench Building Guide, if you want one for using hand tools, experts seem to agree on two main features: it needs mass, and it needs a flat top.

Without weight, a bench will bounce, flex, and potentially move around the shop. If it is flat, it is a good reference surface to work on.

The construction uses construction grade pine and gets most of its weight from a thick laminate top. I'm bad at using hand tools, but at least now I can't blame my poor technique on a flimsy bench.

Step 1: Materials and design

Base frame: 90 x 45mm (the metric version of 2 x 4 construction/pine framing) was used for the base frame of the bench. Some of the darker/aged woods in the photos were salvaged from a very basic previous attempt at a bench that, while solid, looked as if it had been built in a Soviet-era factory and wasn't really up to the task.

A note on measurement:

I know that many potential readers will prefer the Imperial measurement system. So I have tried to provide measurements and dimensions in both metric and imperial.

Two caveats: I don't "think" about Imperial, so if I've transposed a measurement I probably wouldn't have noticed. If any measurement seems overly massive or small, just assume I got it really wrong.

Also, my dimensions to metric have been converted using an online tool. So there may be some slight rounding as a result, hopefully nothing serious enough to kick someone out.

  • Legs: 4 lengths of 90 x 45 mm (3 9/16″ x 1 3/4″) cut to 85 cm (33 7/16″)
  • Long stretchers: 4 lengths of 90 x 45 mm (3 9/16″ x 1 3/4″) cut to 120 cm (47 1/4″)
  • Short stretchers: 4 lengths of 90 x 45 mm (3 9/16″ x 1 3/4″) cut to 51 cm (20 1/16″)
  • Laminate bench: 17 lengths of 90 x 35 mm cut to 1.8 m long (70 7/8″). This is the length I would have liked, but I had to fit the bench between two brick piers in the garage which limited me to one foot (about 30 cm) less in countertop length.

The straightest boards, at least at my local store, were 4.2 meters long (14 feet long) that I had cut to size. As an added bonus, they also seemed to have fewer knots and defects.

Step 2: Half turns

Simple half-round frames were made using a circular saw and clearing away debris with a chisel. Long stretchers have a 90mm (3 9/16″) wide rebate on each end cut 22.5mm (7/8″) deep.

The leg pieces are recessed 90 mm (3 9/16″) wide at one end cut 22.5 mm (7/8″) deep. At the other end, the 90mm (3 9/16″) rebate is cut 76mm (3″) from the end.

Short stretchers are not discounted as they are simply screwed into place

Step 3: Frame it

It interlocks extensive stretchers and leg pieces that can be glued and screwed (or threaded) together. I wasn't able to take a photo of the next step, which is simply screwing the short stretchers together to create the bench base assembly.

Step 4: Laminate

My construction pine came with a rounded profile on all edges - I took a few millimeters off each edge with my table saw to make the boards completely square.

Then I placed them tothat any knots or imperfections be placed. face down (this will create the cleanest countertop and helps when brushing).

It helps if you number or mark the order of the pieces, as the top needs to be glued in stages (and it's easy to lose track of what order and orientation the wood needs to be laid out).

Step 5: Glue

I had 17 boards to glue together, which is way too many to try at once, so I glued and clamped 5 together as my initial test of how it would all work. To remove high spots and dried glue that was squeezed out during gluing try sanding. Use baking paper or similar under the glued boards to catch any squeezing glue and to prevent the boards from sticking to the work surface you are using.

Step 6: Continue with the glue

Once you have your laminate top glued into three solid sections (I did initial glues of six boards, six boards, and five boards) and then glued everything together. Use as many clamps as you have and apply more glue than you think you need.

Step 7: Flat Plane

Getting a Handheld Plane Planer (#4) will work, but a longer body version may be faster and easier. Then try to plan the upper plane.

This will take hours and make a lot of chips, but it is much more satisfying than doing it with an electric sander or planer.

Use a ruler to regularly check for high spots and to make sure you're not making "valleys" or low spots. I found it easiest to make overlapping diagonal passes with the Airplane Planer at about 45 degrees from the long end of the work surface, moving from left to right.

Once a sweep is performed, repeat at the opposite 45-degree angle moving from right to left along the work surface. Rinse and repeat.

Once it is close to the floor, you can make long sweeps directly along the top in alignment with the orientation of the laminate boards.

Step 8: Final Assembly

Dry fit to make sure everything goes as planned. Use carriage bolts to screw through the frame (try to avoid screwing into countertop glue lines) to hold the countertop in place.

Wood nerds will tell you not to do this because of the movement of the wood. I found that my lamination barely moves and I haven't had any problems in 2.5 years

Step 9: The end

I used dowels to join contrasting strips of red cedar to cover the end grain of the laminate and applied boiled linseed oil all over, and drilled 3/4″ (19mm) holes for vise bolts.

Don't let anyone tell you that a bench must be a good piece of furniture or that it must be a work of art. I loved how it looked when it was done, but now it's completely subservient to other projects.

And that's fine. There's no point in building something so "precious" and perfect that you're afraid to cut, chisel, and hammer it.

Mine is now used honorably (and abused appropriately), as shown in the final image.
