Garden Paint Palette, check out this ingenious DIY technique using a garden paint palette, without a doubt an interesting idea to organize your plants.
You will probably need a weekend to complete the project.
Steps to build a garden paint palette
Step 1: Necessary Things

Materials needed:
(What I used, I had lying around the house.)
- 1 Foam Board – 1/2 2″ sheet. (You can also use a sheet of plywood)
- 1″x4″ x 6′ pine board (Reclaimed wood, would work!)
- Sierra
- Flowers (rainbow colors)
- Pots
- Small shovel and rake
- Painting
- Finish for amder
- 3M blue masking tape
- 2 Lag Bolts – 4″ 5/16″
- 4 2″ – 5/16″
- 10 Transport Screws – 5/16″
Step 2: Transferring the Design to the Material

You could remove the palette freehand, but I preferred to use my trusty overhead projector.
That way, I get everything in the right proportions.
- Once you have the vectors printed.
- I made a transparency with my laser copier.
- Then I projected it onto the material.
- I used a shape to outline the palette.
Step 3: Cut the material

- Once the outline is drawn. I went back over the outlines with some templates for the boats I had.
- Like, the holes had to be able to fit the pots.
- Pots come in different sizes, so measure your pots.
- I measured the roundness of the pots and created a vector file of a round circle.
Mine was about 5.5″. I had to make a couple different sizes to see what would fit in the pots. - Then I used a saw to cut the foam. It was very easy to cut. A little messy, but easy.
- Once cut, I sanded all the edges with 150 grit sandpaper.
Step 4: Making the Support

- The base could be made in many different ways.
I sketched out some quick ideas and ran with them. - I had some 1″x 4″ cedar.
- I followed my pattern that I made in Coreldraw.
- I used double stick tape to hold the boards together. Therefore, you could get exact copies of each one. The pictures above say 1000 words!
- I used glue to mount the rails to the board. I also used construction screws to fastenattach the rails to the boards.
- Don't forget the hole!
Step 5: Place the support on the pallet

- I connected the wood to the foam with the 2.5″ lag bolts. Don't forget the washer on the nut side.
- I put the nuts on the lower side.
Step 6: Make the rake and shovel support

- I had to have a place to put the rake and shovel.
I had a 2-inch piece of PVC pipe lying around. - I simply cut it in half at the proper angle and screwed and glued them to the bracket.
- I only guessed the angle a bit, as I made some practice cuts on some scraps.
- You want to mount the pallet to the bracket to get the correct location. It took and another person to find the correct placement.
- You will need to drill a drain hole in the pipe to allow the water to drain.
- Now to paint the shovel and rake...
Step 7: Paint

- Now, to paint the shovel and rake.
- You could just leave them as is. The red scoop was a little bright for me. But, I thought I could make them look more like a brush.
- I just masked them off and painted the silver first. Then mask again, paint black.
- I used black electrical tape for the markings on the silver part. Then, give them a coat of urethane or polyurethane.
Step 8: Paint and paint the palette

- I painted the pallet with some door paint that I had used previously.
It was the door painting kit. - You can only paint the material tan and then stain the wood. That looks good too!
- Did a good job on the foam board. It actually looks like real wood! The foam is very durable too!
- If you used plywood, you could stain and varnish the plywood.
- After painting, you can varnish the palette.
Step 9: Done!
Remember that you can use whatever measurements you think are necessary to build your own paint palette for
