Try this DIY fireplace/pit construction that has a tall back wall so you can keep it tight to a side fence (though not too tight) or in a corner.

It works best with semi-circular seating so all your guests can feel the warmth.

Steps to build a fireplace or fire pit

Step 1: Materials

You will only use a fraction of that 1/2 yard, so make sure you have a place to store the rest. If you don't, just ask the guys/gals at the garden center to give you a 1/4 despite paying a 1/2.

I got lucky and while building a deck for a friend, he wanted to get rid of all the stones in his patio instead of leaving them under the deck... so I took them! Having these stones is what started this project in the first place, so if you find yourself with a pile of stones, this might be the project to put them to good use.

Tools you need to build a fireplace:

Mark where you want your fireplace to go with your marking paint. I made mine 4ft x 4ft so the stones I have will fit as best as possible. A great idea would be to do math on the stones before marking and see what dimensions work for what you have.

Using your edge shovel, dig on the outside of your line (make your dig a little larger than your mark for easier laying), trying to get about 4-5″ below grade.

You can use a shovel and edge shovels, to clean all the dirt within the marked area trying to make it as 'flat' as possible at approximately 4-5″ below grade. Use the manual tamper, tamp down the dirt to get a flat/level work surface. Rake the soil if it is not level enough.

Step 3: Filling and level

Get your shovel and fill in the newly dug area. You will want to rake it trying to keep it as level as possible. Fill in about 1-2″, rake, then tamp it down using your hand tamper.

Repeat that step until you are about 1/2″ below the level of the grass.
Using your levels, make sure your exterior is level on all four sides and diagonals. If it is not level, rake, fill and tamp until it is level.

Step 4: Build the bottom row

Grab your stones and start placing the base row in a corner.
Work in both directions from that corner. Until you reach the adjacent corners. Finish the last side until the base row is completed. There is no need to use a tape measure to check for "squareness" if all the stones are the same size.

Make sure opposite sides have the same number of stones and that all corners line upn… Made the hole a little bigger than I really wanted in step 1 to make this easier. Your hole does not have to be square where you dug because you will be filling in where you dug.

Make sure all four sides are level. If they aren't, use your body weight (or a rubber mallet) to level the stones... This first row of bases is the MOST IMPORTANT! After all, a structure is only as good as its foundation.

Step 5: Accumulate

Using the rest of your stones, build! Be sure to overlap the bricks in a pattern so that the edges of each brick do not line up. This is especially important in corners. I had to build, then tear down, then build again to make sure I was lining up the fewest edges.

Take your time and make sure you complete an entire row before moving on to the next.

Step 6: Keep building and power up

Continue placing rows until you get the desired height/look. I would recommend creating some 'airflow' if possible in some of the lower rows to help get the much needed 'oxygen' to help fuel your fires. I made mine halfway up the back wall (the tallest wall). I really like symmetry, so that was just my little touch on the design.

Once you have what you want, load the well and turn it on. Without a doubt, this DIY job on how to build a fireplace easily is an excellent idea that you can implement in your home to captivate your guests.

As a last recommendation, I had some concrete left over from a previous construction, so I mixed a small amount and poured it into the bottom. This is a great move because then you have a true 'foundation' after each fire and you are not continually digging more and more of your pit when you are clearing the ashes... Once you hit the concrete, no more digging!
