How to Make a Desk Using Coins, we will show you how to create an impressive Epoxy desk using pennies (coins).
Step 1: Materials

First of all, you will need a lot of pennies (COINS). Approximately 40 by 22 inches. Don't have a massive change jar on hand? Simply stop by your local bank.
I polished half of our pennies with Tarn-X. It's very easy to use: just pour it over the coins and then rinse.
Polishing some of the coins gives the final result a nice mix of shiny and tarnished finishes.
Step 2: Preparation

My desk was built from scratch to fit the space we needed, but I could use a pre-existing table or desk without a problem.
We painted it black before we started adding the pennies.
Start placing your coins on the front edge, securing them with a small dot of super glue.
We set a straight edge ruler to guide our first line, and angled our first line of coins to fit around the rounded edge of the desk.
However, you don't have to do this: you can place the pennies right on top and cut them straight.
Step 3: Fold

If you decide you want to fold your coins to wrap the edges, here's how we did it: We wrapped a small piece of electrical tape around one of the titanium rings to fill it in slightly. (If that helps, use a size 10.5 ring.)
Next, pliers were used to bend each penny toward the inner curve of the ring. Just put the penny inside the ring and tighten with the pliers.
Warning: This requires a LOT of hand strength.
Step 4: Completing the surface

Now, start gluing! I spent about four nights working on arranging and gluing each coin.
It would have been much faster, but I was carefully arranging the different colors and mixing them into "special" pennies (coins from other countries, etc.) at regular intervals.
As you can see in the second image, only a small spot of glue was needed to secure each coin.
Step 5: Be careful with your edges

If you have a Dremel, glue the pennies on first, hanging over the edge, and then cut them out later. (first photo) If you don't have a Dremel, use heavy cutouts to cut out the coins before gluing them.
The pennies were folded and cut to cover the edge of the corner of the desk. This was the most complicated part, and again requires a lot of hand strength (and strong cuts!)
Step 6: Prepare to Pour!

When your surface is ready, prepare your area to pour the epoxy. You need a place where you can leave it untouched for two days, and that's relatively dust-free.
We settled in a back room of our house.
Cover the floor with lots of heavy plastic - very, VERY important, as the epoxy will drip to the floor - and place the top of your desk on some sawhorses or other supports, making sure the edges are clear.
Step 7: Pour!

Our epoxy was old, left over from another project, so it had turned a little yellow.
You can see the gold tint in the photos. Typically epoxy is very clear though, so don't let my photos scare you. 🙂
Once you've poured it all (use as much as the label says for the amount of area you're covering), start tilting your surface to get the epoxy all the way to the edges. You want it to drip *over* the edges, to cover them. (See why you need all that plastic on the floor?)
Step 8: Borders

To get an even coating on the edges, you may need to scoop some epoxy off the floor with a metal spatula or spoon and place it back on the edge.
Do this as many times as necessary to get a smooth cover.
Also, keep in mind that pennies on the edges will prevent the epoxy from being smooth. My desk has a slightly wavy effect on the front edge, which I actually think feels really cool.
Just make sure you get the epoxy into all the cracks and don't miss any areas.
Step 9: Torch!

This part is surprisingly fun: Use a small blowtorch (like the one you have in your kitchen to toast crème brulee) and quickly run it over the surface of your epoxy, about 6 inches above it, to remove all the air bubbles. (And there will be A LOT of air bubbles.)
The bubbles will rise and appear like magic, leaving a smooth surface like glass. Like I said: Fun!
Step 10: I Hate Waiting

And now: you wait.
Your epoxy should take approximately one day to set up and two days to dry. Check the label on your epoxy, and go by that to be safe.
When completely dry, use a utility blade to cut/scrape excess epoxy drips from the bottom edges of your desk and install as you would any other surface.
And it's ready!
