Microsoft is reviving the classic MS-DOS Editor as an open source application for all platforms 2026

Microsoft has released a modern version of the classic MS-DOS Editor, bringing back a piece of computing history that first appeared in MS-DOS 5.0 in 1991.

The new open-source tool, built in the Rust programming language and simply called “Edit,” works on Windows, macOS and—in a development that would have seemed unthinkable three decades ago—Linux.

According to Christopher Nguyen, product manager in Microsoft's Windows Terminal team, the main motivation for creating the new version of Edit was "the need for a default CLI text editor on 64-bit versions of Windows." As he explains, "32-bit versions of Windows include the MS-DOS processor, but 64-bit versions do not have a pre-installed CLI processor".

At just 250KB in size, the new Edit maintains the small program philosophy of its predecessor while adding features that the original editor could not even imagine: Unicode support, regular expressions, and the ability to handle gigabyte-sized files. The original editor was limited to files smaller than 300KB depending on available conventional memory.
