Woolworths is under fire after a Guardian Australia investigation revealed the supermarket giant raised prices on popular items just days after promising to freeze prices on 300 family staples for three months. The scandal, dubbed the Woolworths price freeze controversy, has sparked outrage among consumers already struggling with the rising cost of living.
Woolworths Price Freeze: What Really Happened?
On [date], Woolworths announced a three-month Price Freeze on 300 essential products to help customers manage household budgets. However, pricing data compiled by CW Scanner and provided to Guardian Australia shows the chain increased the prices of at least four key products after the promotion began. The most egregious example: chicken fillets, which saw a 33% mark-up.

The data tracked prices before, during, and after the freeze announcement, revealing a pattern of increases that contradicts the supermarket's public commitment. Woolworths has defended its actions, claiming the price changes were due to supplier cost increases and that the freeze applied to a specific list of products.
Key Takeaways for Shoppers
- Chicken fillets rose by 33% shortly after the freeze began.
- At least four other products also increased in price.
- Woolworths claims the freeze covered only selected items.
- Consumer groups are calling for greater transparency.
- Shoppers are advised to compare prices and check unit costs.
Price Comparison: Before and After the Freeze
| Product | Price Before Freeze | Price During Freeze | % Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken Fillets (per kg) | $9.00 | $12.00 | 33% |
| Beef Mince (per kg) | $12.00 | $13.50 | 12.5% |
| Milk (2L) | $2.50 | $2.80 | 12% |
| Bread (loaf) | $3.00 | $3.30 | 10% |
These increases add up quickly for families trying to make ends meet. The Woolworths price freeze was meant to provide relief, but instead, many shoppers feel misled.
Political Fallout and Consumer Response
The controversy has drawn political attention. Former prime minister Tony Abbott weighed in on a separate issue—a cartoon posted by One Nation—but the broader conversation about supermarket pricing and corporate honesty is heating up. Consumer advocacy groups are demanding an investigation into whether Woolworths' actions breached Australian Consumer Law.
Meanwhile, our reporter Caitlin Cassidy explored what it's like to turn the algorithm off and escape the filter bubbles that shape our online experiences. In a world where algorithms dictate what we see and buy, transparency from retailers is more important than ever.
What Can Shoppers Do?
To avoid being caught out by misleading promotions, shoppers should:
- Check unit prices rather than total prices.
- Compare prices across supermarkets.
- Keep receipts and track price changes.
- Report suspected misleading pricing to the ACCC.
Woolworths has stated it will review its pricing practices, but trust may already be broken. As the cost of living continues to rise, Australians deserve honest and transparent pricing from their supermarkets.
