Illegal Gold Mining in Amazon: Inside the War on Devastation 2026

Illegal gold mining in the Amazon has reached a crisis point, with the destruction of vast swathes of Indigenous territory. The recent razing of Vila Cururu, an illicit mining settlement in Brazil's Sararé region, highlights the scale of the devastation. Brazilian security forces are waging an all-out war to reclaim lands desecrated by thousands of prospectors who used explosives and heavy machinery to extract gold, leaving behind a scarred landscape.

The Heart of the Amazonian Gold Rush

Sararé, a protected area near the border with Bolivia, has lost 4% of its forests between January 2024 and August 2025. Over 17.3 square miles (44.8 km²)—almost half the size of Manhattan—have been destroyed since the gold rush began five years ago. Indigenous leader Jackson Katitãurlu of the Nambiquara people described the scene: “They wiped out everything. They destroyed nature.” The encampment of Vila Cururu once bustled with intoxicated miners, makeshift brothels, and rampant environmental crime.

Authorities Strike Back

Under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the government has intensified efforts to eradicate illegal mining. Nilton Tubino, the eviction tsar, led a land and air assault in late March 2025, forcing miners to flee into the forests. Tubino marched through the charred ruins of Garimpo Quatro, one of Sararé's largest mines, armed with an 18-inch machete. He called the scene “total devastation.” The operation marks a dramatic shift from the previous administration under Jair Bolsonaro, which tacitly tolerated such activities.

Key Takeaways from the Amazon Mining Crisis

• Illegal gold mining drives deforestation, mercury pollution, and violence against Indigenous communities.
• Brazil's security crackdown has destroyed major encampments but miners often return or relocate.
• Preserving Indigenous territories is essential for climate regulation and biodiversity.
• International demand for gold fuels the illegal trade; stronger supply chain regulations are needed.
