Andy Burnham's EU strategy is under the microscope as Brussels prepares for a pivotal summit. The UK prime minister, little known in European capitals, now faces the same dilemmas that have challenged predecessors since Brexit. EU leaders have congratulated him, but expectations are high for concrete progress on defence, energy, and economic ties.
The EU's Expectations for Andy Burnham
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized strengthening the EU-UK partnership for security and prosperity. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz invited Burnham to Berlin, citing a deep connection. According to Georg Riekeles, a former Brexit taskforce adviser, Burnham starts with a blank sheet—an advantage. The key question is whether he will align with the EU on defence cooperation, energy, and a positive economic agenda.

Economic Cooperation and Trade
Brussels wants a stable, predictable partner. The EU seeks to deepen trade ties without reopening Brexit wounds. Burnham's past remarks about rejoining the EU have raised eyebrows, but during campaigning he made reversing Brexit a non-priority. This pragmatic stance is welcomed by EU diplomats, who note that being little known can be beneficial.
Defence and Security Alignment
With geopolitical tensions rising, the EU expects the UK to remain a close security ally. Collaborative efforts on NATO and joint defense projects are priorities. Burnham’s government must signal commitment without undermining EU decision-making.
