Andy Burnham's positive leadership stands in stark contrast to Keir Starmer's gloomy tenure, offering a vision of hope and possibility for the UK. As the only party leader with a favourability rating above zero (+13), Burnham's approach resonates with a public weary of pessimism. His first Commons appearance this week, responding to all 125 questioners with warmth and empathy, highlighted a natural timbre that Starmer lacked.
The Contrast in Leadership Styles
Keir Starmer's rating plummeted to -36, leading to his defenestration. His early message of an economic and societal "black hole" and that "things will get worse before they get better" set a tone of despair. In contrast, Burnham promises to "unlock a feeling of positivity and possibility" across the nation, a message that could redefine political engagement.

Why Positivity Matters in Politics
Research and history suggest that hope and optimism can drive voter engagement and economic confidence. Burnham's approach aligns with psychological principles that positive messaging can inspire action, whereas fear often leads to apathy. His potential byelection confrontation with the Greens in Holborn and St Pancras could test this theory, as his leadership might secure a Labour win.
