The assisted dying bill is at a pivotal moment, and MPs have a final chance to make history by voting for it. This bill would grant terminally ill adults the right to request assistance in ending their lives, a profound shift in end-of-life rights.
What Is the Assisted Dying Bill?
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, introduced by Lauren Edwards, seeks to legalize assisted dying for those with a terminal illness and less than six months to live. It includes strict safeguards: two independent doctors must confirm the diagnosis and mental capacity, and a High Court judge must approve each request. This bill represents a carefully crafted compromise that balances autonomy with protection.

Why This Vote Matters
Tomorrow's second reading vote is critical. If it fails, the bill dies for this Parliament, and future parliaments may be less progressive. As the article states, eras with a Labour majority have historically expanded freedoms—on abortion, capital punishment, divorce, gay rights, and more. This is the moment to add assisted dying to that legacy.
The Horror of the Status Quo
Every day, an average of 17 people die in unspeakable pain, disgust, and terror. Reports from Dignity in Dying reveal palliative care staff describing patients who retch at the stench of their own rotting bodies, vomit faeces, or suffocate slowly over days. Nothing can relieve their suffering. This is the inescapable truth that MPs must confront.
Key Takeaways
- Final chance: If the bill fails tomorrow, it won't return for the rest of this Parliament.
- Strict safeguards: Two doctors and a High Court judge must approve each request.
- Progressive legacy: Labour eras have historically expanded personal freedoms.
- Public support: Polls show overwhelming backing for assisted dying among UK adults.
How Does the UK Compare?
Many countries have already legalized assisted dying, with varying safeguards. The table below compares key aspects.
| Country | Legal Since | Eligibility | Approval Process |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 2002 | Unbearable suffering, no prospect of improvement | Two doctors, review committee |
| Canada | 2016 | Grievous and irremediable condition | Two assessors, possible court review |
| USA (Oregon) | 1997 | Terminal illness, 6 months to live | Two doctors, waiting period |
| UK (proposed) | Pending | Terminal illness, 6 months to live | Two doctors, High Court judge |
The Case for Urgency
MPs who support assisted dying must attend and vote. As the article urges, "turn up and vote on Lauren Edwards's bill." The consequences of inaction are dire: more people will suffer needlessly. The bill's opponents raise concerns about coercion and the slippery slope, but the proposed safeguards are among the strictest in the world. This is not about ending lives; it's about ending suffering.
What Happens Next?
If the bill passes second reading, it moves to committee stage for detailed scrutiny. If it fails, it cannot be reintroduced in this Parliament. The vote is expected to be close, with MPs given a free vote. Every vote counts.
