The Queensland government has unveiled concept plans for the Brisbane Olympic stadium precinct at Victoria Park, but critics dismiss the vision as a 'fantasy vision' lacking essential infrastructure details. This article breaks down the proposed design, the controversy, and what it means for Brisbane's 2032 Olympics legacy.
Brisbane Olympic Stadium Precinct: The Concept Plans
The draft precinct plan includes a 63,000-seat oval-shaped stadium, a new national aquatic centre, and two pedestrian bridges over the Brisbane inner-city bypass. The government promises that two-thirds of Victoria Park will remain green space, with plans to expand York's Hollow wetland and add a public amphitheatre.

Key Features of the Proposed Design
- 63,000-seat stadium with oval shape
- National aquatic centre
- Two pedestrian bridges connecting to Spring Hill and CBD
- Wetland expansion and amphitheatre
- Retention of 66% green space
Critics Call It a 'Fantasy Vision'
Opponents argue the concept images lack detail on carparks, roads, transport links, and plazas needed for large crowds. The loss of inner-city parkland and concerns from First Nations people about culturally significant sites add to the controversy.
Comparison: Current vs. Proposed Victoria Park
| Aspect | Current | Proposed |
|---|---|---|

| Access | Limited | Pedestrian bridges |
Legacy or Loss? The Debate Continues
Premier David Crisafulli calls it a 'state-shaping precinct' that will be a legacy like South Bank for Expo '88. However, locals and heritage advocates worry about the permanent loss of green space and the impact on Barrambin, the traditional name for the parkland.
What's Next for the 2032 Olympics
The project is entering early construction phases, but no detailed infrastructure plan has been released. The government will need to address parking, public transport, and environmental concerns before final approval.
