A Chinese warship conducted live-fire drills inside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) for the first time on Sunday, escalating maritime tensions in the region. The drill involved a missile destroyer firing live rounds approximately 180 kilometers from Okinotori, Japan's southernmost island. This action marks a significant shift in naval posturing and has drawn sharp diplomatic responses from Tokyo.
Details of the Live-Fire Drill
Three Chinese warships and a Russian frigate were first detected sailing between Okinawa's main island and Miyako island into the Pacific on Thursday. By early Sunday, the Chinese missile destroyer was spotted about 330 kilometers southwest of Okinotori. It issued a warning to nearby shipping before using machine guns with live ammunition. Japan's defense ministry confirmed this as the first acknowledged foreign navy live-fire exercise in its EEZ.

Japan's Reaction and Diplomatic Channels
Japan's top government spokesman, Minoru Kihara, stated that the drill was "part of a move by the two militaries toward strengthening their cooperation." Tokyo protested through diplomatic channels, arguing the drill could have endangered nearby ships. Japan continues to monitor the area with air and sea surveillance assets.
China's Stance on Okinotori
Beijing disputes Okinotori's designation as an island, insisting it is a reef and therefore the surrounding waters are not part of Japan's EEZ. This legal interpretation allows China to claim freedom of navigation and military operations there. A Chinese aircraft carrier and research ship entered the same waters earlier in 2025, but the live-fire drill is a notable escalation.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Chinese and Russian military exercises around Japan have increased since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a diplomatic row over comments by Japanese politician Sanae Takaichi. The growing military cooperation between Beijing and Moscow near Japanese territory raises concerns for regional stability.
| Factor | Impact on Japan-China Relations |

| Live-fire drill in EEZ | First-ever acknowledged foreign live-fire exercise; diplomatic protest lodged. |
| Dispute over Okinotori status | China classifies it as a reef; Japan asserts island status for EEZ rights. |
| Increased Sino-Russian naval activity | Cooperative exercises rise amid Ukraine war and bilateral tensions. |
| Previous incursions (2025) | Aircraft carrier and research ship entered EEZ, but without live fire. |
