England rugby central contracts have been reshaped by head coach Steve Borthwick, with Ollie Lawrence and Elliot Daly losing their deals ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The 25-man list signals a strategic shift toward younger talent and future-proofing the squad.
Key Changes in England Rugby Central Contracts
Borthwick has made five changes to the list, which includes around £150,000 per season for each contracted player. The omissions of Lawrence and Daly are the most surprising, given their past contributions and versatility.

Who Lost Their Central Contracts?
- Ollie Lawrence – Bath centre, starred in the autumn win over New Zealand but fell down the pecking order.
- Elliot Daly – 33-year-old versatile back, previously tipped for a key World Cup role.
- Ben Curry – Injury-plagued flanker.
- Tom Roebuck – Sale winger.
- Tom Willis – Moved to Bordeaux.
Who Gained Contracts?
- Alex Coles – Northampton forward.
- Asher Opoku-Fordjour – Sale prop, can play both sides of the scrum.
- Seb Atkinson – Centre, whose inclusion explains Lawrence's exclusion.
- Guy Pepper – Flanker.
- Jack van Poortvliet – Scrum-half returning from injury.
Why These Changes Matter for the World Cup
Borthwick is clearly focusing on players who can contribute immediately and develop for the 2027 tournament in Australia. The omission of Courtney Lawes, despite his availability, suggests a move away from veteran experience.
Lawrence's exclusion is a surprise, but Atkinson's emergence provides a similar skill set with more long-term potential. Daly's versatility is valued, but his age and recent injury may have influenced the decision.
Comparison Table: In vs Out
| Player | Position | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ollie Lawrence | Centre | Out | Fell down pecking order |
| Elliot Daly | Utility back | Out | Age and injury |
| Alex Coles | Lock | In | Young talent |
| Asher Opoku-Fordjour | Prop | In | Versatility |
| Seb Atkinson | Centre | In | Replacement for Lawrence |
Implications for the Squad
These contracts give Borthwick greater control over player workloads and preparation. The inclusions of younger players like Coles and Opoku-Fordjour indicate a shift toward building a squad for the long term.
Lawrence and Daly are not necessarily out of World Cup contention, as Borthwick will name a larger squad for the tournament. However, they will need to perform well in domestic and international fixtures to earn a place.
Key Takeaways
- England rugby central contracts reflect a youth-focused strategy.
- Lawrence and Daly's omissions are notable but not career-ending.
- New inclusions bring versatility and potential.
- Courtney Lawes' absence signals a changing of the guard.
