GB News will not be investigated by media regulator Ofcom after a presenter claimed there was no riot in Belfast, sparking over 400 complaints. The controversy highlights ongoing debates about broadcasting accuracy and impartiality in UK media.
What Happened on GB News?
During a broadcast of Late Show Live, presenter Bev Turner stated there were no riots in Belfast despite widespread reports of cars and houses being set alight, attacks on police, and families fleeing their homes. Turner said, “There was no riot. There is not a house that has been burnt down. There are no riots.” When challenged by guest Matthew Stadlen, who pointed to footage of burning vehicles and homes, Turner replied she had seen it and it was “not that dramatic.”

Ofcom’s Decision Not to Investigate
Ofcom received 446 complaints but decided not to investigate, citing that Turner was challenged on air and was expressing her own opinion. Critics argue this sets a low bar for compliance with broadcasting rules. Richard Wilson of Reliable Media said, “Whether or not a house burned down is not a matter of opinion.”
Context of the Violence
The unrest in Belfast followed a knife attack allegedly by a Sudanese man, with a video shared by far-right figures like Tommy Robinson. Turner later defended her comments on social media, saying she was “relying on sparse footage” and feared the disorder would be used to introduce new government controls.
