Javier Milei, Argentina's far-right president, has escalated his claims of a coordinated anti-Argentina campaign during the World Cup, accusing the US Democratic party and the governments of Brazil and Mexico of financing the effort. In a radio interview, Milei alleged that "progressive minds" were behind criticism of Argentina's team, racism accusations against its fans, and conspiracy theories that Lionel Messi's side was secretly favored by FIFA.
The Accusations and Their Context
More than a week after Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final, Milei continues to denounce what he calls a smear campaign. He specifically named Brazil's left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as providing the largest share of funding. The claims come amid falling approval ratings for Milei, whose aggressive austerity plan—dubbed his "chainsaw" approach—has sparked widespread protests.

Political Motivations and Reactions
Analysts in Argentina view Milei's narrative as a distraction from domestic economic turmoil. "The real anti-Argentina campaign is the one the president is waging with his chainsaw," one commentator noted. Yet the story has gained traction among some citizens. Pablo Torres, a 52-year-old bookseller who does not support Milei, expressed outrage over what he called a "social media bombardment" against Argentina, accusing former colonial powers of hypocrisy.
