How LNZ Cherkasy became a wartime success story with few modern parallels is a tale of resilience and ambition. The club, from what was once a football backwater in Ukraine, has stunned the football world by rising from the fourth tier to the top flight and now making its European debut against Gent in the Conference League.
The Rapid Rise of LNZ Cherkasy
Only a few years ago, LNZ Cherkasy were playing in the fourth division of Ukrainian football. They turned professional in 2020 and by 2025-26 were runners-up in the Ukrainian Premier League, behind only the mighty Shakhtar Donetsk. This meteoric ascent is unprecedented, especially given the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Under the leadership of 26-year-old CEO Vasyl Kayuk, the youngest in top-flight history, the club has embraced a fresh mentality. “No one expected anything from us,” Kayuk says. “The biggest motivation and advantage is that you are young and nobody believes in you.”
European Debut Against Gent
On Thursday, LNZ will face Belgian side Gent in the second qualifying round of the Conference League. It is a historic moment for the city of Cherkasy, located in central Ukraine. A billboard near the Dnipro river reads: “Cherkasy, football centre of Ukraine” in the club’s purple livery.
Mark Assinor, LNZ striker, says: “We are making history. There’s been a change in mentality here and I think this is only a starting point for the club.”
