North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

The Ukraine war briefing reveals that North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who also called on South Korea for air defense support. This escalation marks a significant increase from the previously estimated 30,000 troops announced in July, signaling a deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow.

North Korea's Military Deployment to Russia: What We Know

Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv has found North Korean missiles on Ukrainian territory, confirming active military cooperation. He emphasized that North Korea will continue to build its experience in modern warfare, receive licenses from Russia, and acquire various military tools. This development raises concerns about the global balance of power and the prolonged nature of the conflict.

Scale of the Deployment

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, a North Korean missile unit has begun deploying personnel and equipment to western Russia. This unit could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for potential strikes against Ukraine. In 2024, North Korea sent an estimated 14,000 soldiers to Russia's Kursk region, where thousands have been wounded or killed.

Military Support and Munitions Supply

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, some of dangerously low quality, according to Russian milbloggers and troops. Additionally, Pyongyang has provided ballistic missiles, long-range artillery, and multiple-launch rocket systems, as confirmed by Ukrainian and independent assessments.

Impact on the Battlefield

The influx of North Korean troops and munitions could bolster Russian defenses and offensive capabilities, potentially prolonging the war. However, the quality of North Korean ammunition has been questioned, with reports of misfires and substandard performance. This may limit its effectiveness on the front lines.

Ukraine's Call for South Korean Support

Zelenskyy expressed a strong desire for support from South Korea, particularly in air defense systems, an area where Ukraine faces critical shortages. He mentioned readiness to work on a drone deal and other cooperation areas, with Ukrainian diplomats in contact with Seoul to push potential agreements.

Air Defense Challenges

Ukraine is severely short of high-end air defenses, and Russia has exploited this by using more ballistic missiles, which are difficult to intercept without systems like the US-owned Patriot. This vulnerability underscores the urgency of international support.

Potential Weapons Package from Turkey

According to US congressional documents, Ukraine is poised to buy 70 ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles from Turkey. However, the US would need to approve the resale, adding another layer of complexity to Ukraine's procurement efforts.
