Russia Frees Ex-US Marine Robert Gilman on Humanitarian Pardon 2026

Russia has freed a former US Marine, Robert Gilman, after Vladimir Putin granted a humanitarian pardon, ending a four-year detention that his family and US officials had disputed. The release marks a significant diplomatic development between Washington and Moscow, with implications for international relations and the treatment of American detainees abroad.

Background of the Case

Robert Gilman, 32, an English teacher and former US Marine, was arrested in January 2022 in Voronezh, Russia, on charges of kicking a police officer while intoxicated. He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, but his family consistently denied the allegations, stating that he accidentally kicked the officer during a medical episode. His father, Vladimir Gilman, wrote in a Boston Globe op-ed that his son had fallen ill and the incident was unintentional.

Health Concerns and Diplomatic Pressure

Gilman's health deteriorated sharply in recent weeks, prompting urgent calls from the White House and State Department for his release. Reports indicated he was transferred to a psychiatric ward in a catatonic-like state, diagnosed with a "dissociative stupor" and severe pneumonia. Senator Edward Markey expressed relief but noted the long-term impact on Gilman's recovery remains unknown.

Release and Return to the US

US officials confirmed Gilman was aboard a State Department plane en route to Washington Dulles airport, where he was greeted by envoy Steve Witkoff and deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka. The humanitarian pardon highlights the role of high-level negotiations in resolving such cases, though details of the deal remain undisclosed.
