Female baristas in Somalia are redefining the country's coffee culture and breaking gender barriers in Mogadishu's booming cafe scene. Saabiriin Hassan, one of the first women to work as a barista in the capital, recalls starting in 2020 out of curiosity after noticing no female counterparts. She took a three-month course and fell in love with the art of coffee-making, paving the way for others.
The Rise of Female Baristas in Somalia
For decades, Somali social life revolved around camel-milk tea, but modern coffee shops now proliferate across Mogadishu. These cafes are not just about coffee—they create spaces for young people and offer job opportunities in a country where over 70% of the population is under 35. Female baristas like Hassan are at the forefront of this transformation, challenging traditional gender roles.

Overcoming Criticism and Changing Minds
Hassan faced criticism from those who said barista work is a man's job and that serving men in public would hurt her marriage prospects. But she persisted, focusing on her goals. Today, attitudes are shifting as more young women follow her path. The improved security in Mogadishu has also attracted returning diaspora members, fueling the cafe boom.
