Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30+ 2026

The Thailand school shooting on October 3, 2023, shocked the nation as a 14-year-old suspect killed at least seven people and injured more than 30, including students and teachers at Debsirin Secondary School in Bangkok. This tragic incident has reignited debates over gun control and youth violence in a country with high private gun ownership rates.

What Happened in the Thailand School Shooting

The suspect, a 14-year-old pupil at Debsirin School, first killed two of his grandparents at their home using a handgun belonging to his grandfather. He then traveled to the school and opened fire, targeting teachers and students. Police confirmed that five teachers were shot before the suspect turned the gun on himself. The attack left at least seven dead, including the grandparents, and over 30 injured, with nine in critical condition.

Casualty Breakdown and Hospital Response

Health Minister Phatthana Phromphat visited Phra Nang Klao Hospital, where three critically injured patients were admitted. Two underwent surgery and were stable, but a 12-year-old girl with a bullet wound to the head remained in a coma. The Higher Education minister donated blood and urged the public to do the same, as hospitals faced a surge of trauma cases.

Suspect's Motive and Evidence

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the suspect was “under stress” and had planned the assault. Police collected evidence from the suspect's home, including computer equipment, suggesting premeditation. The suspect's use of his grandfather's handgun highlights easy access to firearms within households.

Government Response and Gun Law Proposal

In response, Charnvirakul vowed to propose a new law restricting public firearm carrying. Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in the world, and this incident is among several mass shootings in recent years. The government faces pressure to implement stricter background checks and safe storage laws.

School Suspension and Community Impact

Debsirin Secondary School suspended all classes from October 10–14, with staff working from home. Students described the terrifying attack in video reports, and the community mourns while supporting victims' families. The incident has sparked national conversations about mental health support for youth and school safety protocols.
