The Trump Saudi nuclear deal starkly contrasts with his demands on Iran, handing the kingdom nuclear enrichment options he swore Iran would never have. This agreement risks undermining decades of non-proliferation efforts and sets a dangerous precedent in the Middle East.
The Hypocrisy of Trump's Nuclear Policy
Donald Trump’s nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia includes provisions for uranium enrichment and reprocessing, while he continues to bomb Iran over its nuclear program. The president previously vowed that Iran would never enrich uranium, but he now offers the Saudis the same capability. This contradiction raises serious questions about the administration’s strategy and its impact on global security.

Key Provisions of the Saudi Deal
The agreement permits Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium after a joint study and to bar independent inspectors from certain sites. This lack of oversight could allow the kingdom to develop nuclear weapons covertly, despite its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
| Provision | Iran (Under Trump’s Demands) | Saudi Arabia (Under the Deal) |
|---|---|---|
| Uranium enrichment | Forbidden entirely | Allowed after joint study |
| International inspectors | Full & unrestricted access | Can bar inspectors from sensitive sites |
| Nuclear weapons intent | Zero enrichment, zero ambiguity | Potential clandestine pathway |
Comparison with the UAE Deal
Trump’s Saudi deal is much less stringent than the 2009 agreement with the United Arab Emirates, which forswore enrichment and reprocessing. This inconsistency weakens the credibility of U.S. non-proliferation commitments globally.
Impact on the Iran Conflict
The Saudi deal likely torpedoes any chance of a restrictive agreement with Iran. Tehran is being asked to abandon nuclear weapons while Israel possesses them and Saudi Arabia gains enrichment rights. The crown prince has explicitly said Saudi Arabia will pursue nuclear weapons if Iran does.

- It exacerbates tensions with Iran and Israel, increasing risk of an arms race.
FAQ
Why did Trump agree to the Saudi nuclear deal?
Trump likely offered the deal to make amends for his war with Iran and to secure Saudi support for U.S. strategic interests. Critics argue it was a political favor to the Saudi leadership.
What are the major risks of the Saudi nuclear deal?
The deal risks a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, undermines the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and sets a precedent that could encourage other nations to seek similar lenient terms.
How does this deal compare to Trump’s Iran policy?
Trump demanded Iran halt all enrichment and accept unfettered inspections, while offering Saudi Arabia the same enrichment capabilities that he bombed Iran to prevent. This hypocrisy threatens global non-proliferation norms.
The Trump administration’s approach to nuclear negotiations is a dangerous game of double standards. By granting Saudi Arabia what he denied Iran, the president risks igniting a nuclear race that could destabilize the entire region for decades to come.
