World Rugby is planning to stage a Six Nations match in the United States, but England have effectively ruled themselves out due to the financial windfall from home fixtures at Twickenham. The governing body is offering financial incentives to unions to take a championship game Stateside as it seeks to build momentum ahead of the 2031 World Cup in the US.
Why World Rugby Wants a Six Nations Match in the US
With the 2031 World Cup set to be hosted in the United States, World Rugby is eager to raise the sport's profile in a market where rugby union remains a niche interest. The governing body believes that staging a high-profile Six Nations match would generate significant commercial and media attention, helping to grow the game before the global showcase.

World Rugby has already scheduled the 2030 Nations Championship finals weekend for the US and has been actively pursuing other high-profile fixtures. This Saturday, Baltimore will host a Test between South Africa and New Zealand, underscoring the push to bring top-tier rugby to American soil.
England's Stance: Twickenham's Financial Pull
England have effectively ruled themselves out of participating in a US-based Six Nations match. A home Six Nations fixture at Twickenham generates approximately £10 million for the Rugby Football Union (RFU), making it financially unviable to move a game abroad without substantial compensation. While World Rugby is willing to help bridge the shortfall, England's stance highlights the delicate balance between global growth and domestic revenue.
Other unions may be more receptive. Ireland vs Italy has been floated as a potential fixture, given the large expatriate communities from both countries on the US east coast. Such a match could draw significant attendance and viewership without sacrificing a major rivalry like England vs France or England vs Wales.
Previous Attempts and Future Prospects
This is not the first time World Rugby has tried to bring top-level rugby to the US. A failed attempt was made to attract the British & Irish Lions to stop in Las Vegas on their way to Australia in 2025. However, England did face the USA in Washington that summer, and the All Blacks met Ireland in Chicago last autumn. These matches have helped test the waters for larger events.
Taking a Six Nations match to America would be a more significant move, given the championship's prestige and the financial value of home fixtures. World Rugby's willingness to offer financial incentives shows its commitment to making it happen, but the cooperation of the unions is essential.
Comparing Financial Impact: Home vs. US Hosting
The table below compares the estimated financial outcomes for a union hosting a Six Nations match at home versus in the US, based on available data and industry estimates.
| Factor | Home Match (e.g., Twickenham) | US Match (with incentives) |
|---|---|---|
| Matchday Revenue | ~£10 million | Variable; potential for high ticket sales in expat hubs |
| Broadcast Revenue | High, due to established audience | Potential for growth in US market |
| World Rugby Incentives | None | Offered to bridge shortfall |
| Long-term Benefit | Limited to domestic growth | Expands global footprint |
