Banger Racing Play Hits the Track: A Smash Hit with Racers 2026

Banger racing is a high-octane motorsport where speed and collisions draw crowds, and now a new play performed on a real racetrack is bringing the adrenaline to the stage. Lexi Crosbie, 14, attended her first theatre show at United Downs Raceway in Cornwall, where The Kneebone Cadillac captures the gritty community of banger racers.

The Unique Fusion of Motorsport and Theatre

Directed by Kyla Goodey, the play is set and performed on the actual track, bridging the gap between racing fans and theatregoers. “It’s been a bridging of worlds,” Goodey says, as racers like Leeta Rawling-Aldridge, who has raced for five years, attended the show. “The crowd are there for the crashes,” she notes, highlighting the sport’s appeal.

How Banger Racing Works

Regular cars are gutted, stripped, and fitted with safety gear for nudge and spin races. Contact is limited but dramatic, with cars crumpling while drivers stay safe. Racers like Rawling-Aldridge have suffered injuries—fractured shoulder and sprained ankle—but remain focused on returning to the track.

Community at the Core

Built on an old tin mine, St Day track is the heart of Cornwall’s banger racing community. “You turn up to a meeting and it’s like you’ve got a whole family there,” says Crosbie. Playwright Carl Grose, who grew up near the track, wanted to capture this tight-knit spirit in The Kneebone Cadillac, originally a radio play in 2011.
