Former MP and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe was allegedly murdered by being hit on the head with a hammer 21 times, a court heard today. Joshua Kerry, 28, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court charged with her killing at her home in Haytor, Devon. The case has drawn widespread attention due to Widdecombe's political prominence and the brutal nature of the attack.
Court Hearing Reveals Shocking Details of Ann Widdecombe Murder
During a brief hearing on Tuesday afternoon, prosecutor Kashif Malik outlined the timeline of events. Security camera footage from Widdecombe's property indicated the fatal attack occurred on 8 July while she was eating lunch. Kerry is alleged to have driven from his home in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, entered her bungalow through the front door, and struck her repeatedly with a hammer.

Malik claimed Kerry was inside the house for only about two minutes before driving off, allegedly taking Widdecombe's wallet from her handbag. The alarm was raised after she failed to attend a pre-arranged online interview for Channel 5's Matt Allwright show shortly before 1pm. Producers tried to contact Widdecombe and her personal assistant multiple times before her gardener found her lying face down on her kitchen floor on the morning of 9 July.
Investigation and Arrest
Emergency services declared Widdecombe dead at the scene, with a provisional cause of death given as blunt force trauma to the head. Kerry was arrested on suspicion of murder on 11 July after being linked to a red Vauxhall Corsa seen outside her bungalow shortly before her death. The case was later taken over by counter-terrorism officers, and Kerry was rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism.
The investigation into whether there was an alleged political or terrorism motivation for Widdecombe's death is ongoing. Kerry, dressed in a grey sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address during the hearing.
