The Barcelona women's exodus continues as star players like Alexia Putellas, Ona Batlle, and Mapi León depart the European champions. Despite winning all four trophies in 2025-26, the club faces a second consecutive summer of high-profile exits, raising questions about long-term stability and the impact of financial fair play on women's football.
Why Are Barcelona Women's Players Leaving?
The primary driver is financial fair play restrictions affecting the club's ability to offer competitive wages. Barcelona's men's team struggles have cascaded down, limiting resources for the women's side. As a result, many players are seeking better contracts abroad, particularly in the Women's Super League (WSL) and other European leagues.

Impact on Barcelona's Squad and Future

The loss of experienced leaders like Putellas and León leaves a leadership void that academy products will struggle to fill.
- 14 of the last 19 departures have moved to English clubs
- Only 2 signings and 2 academy promotions since 2024
- Internal management crisis highlighted by free transfers of key players
FAQ
Why are Barcelona women's players leaving?
Players are leaving primarily due to financial fair play constraints at Barcelona, which limit wages and investment in the women's team. Better offers from WSL and other European clubs are attracting top talent.
Who are the biggest departures?
The biggest losses are twice Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, defender Mapi León, and Spain international Ona Batlle. Forward Salma Paralluelo is also expected to leave.
What does this mean for Barcelona's Champions League chances?
With a thin squad and no major signings, Barcelona will struggle to defend their Champions League title. The exodus weakens depth and leadership, making a rebuild essential.
As the summer transfer window continues, Barcelona's women's team faces an uncertain future. The latest exodus signals that even winning everything is not enough to retain players when financial instability reigns. Fans can only hope the club finds a way to regain its competitive edge.
