De Zerbi Wants Richarlison to Stay at Tottenham After Sydney 2026

Roberto De Zerbi wants Richarlison to stay at Tottenham, but the Brazilian striker remains uncertain about his future after scoring a dramatic 92nd-minute winner against Chelsea in Sydney. The pre-season friendly showcased why the Spurs boss values the forward, despite ongoing transfer speculation linking him with a move away from north London.

Speaking after the match, De Zerbi revealed that Richarlison has given mixed signals about his intentions. "I don't know, I didn't understand well, because sometimes he said to stay, sometimes he leaves, we have to speak," the Italian manager admitted. "Anyway, there is not any problem, he's a lovely guy. All of us love him, the teammates, the club, the staff, because he works hard every day."

Richarlison's Impact and Contract Situation

Richarlison, who joined Tottenham from Everton in 2022, has less than a year remaining on his current contract. Despite struggling for consistent form during his tenure in London, the 27-year-old has proven his worth in crucial moments. His late winner against Chelsea in front of over 80,000 fans at Accor Stadium highlighted his predatory instincts in the box.

De Zerbi emphasized the difficulty of replacing a proven goalscorer. "For me he's still an important player because it's not so easy to find another striker [like] Richarlison, because Richarlison scored goals and he knows the way. The new striker, we don't know, the other striker, we don't know. He scored 12 goals last season, not for luck, because he feels the way to score."

Match Highlights: 10-Man Spurs Edge Chelsea

The match, the first ever meeting between the two London clubs outside the UK, had all the intensity of a derby. Kevin Danso was sent off just minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute, reducing Tottenham to 10 men. However, Richarlison's late tap-in after Jamie Donley's shot hit the post ensured Spurs avoided a penalty shootout.

The game also featured several robust challenges, with Conor Gallagher earning a yellow card for a heavy tackle on Dário Essugo. Jan Paul van Hecke and João Pedro clashed, while Dominic Solanke and Levi Colwill tussled off the ball, keeping the friendly competitive throughout.

Why Richarlison Remains Vital for Tottenham

Richarlison's work rate and ability to find scoring positions make him a unique asset. His 12-goal tally last season came despite injury setbacks and competition for places. De Zerbi's public backing suggests the club may be reluctant to let him leave without a suitable replacement lined up.

Here's a quick comparison of Richarlison's recent output versus potential alternatives:

As the table shows, replacing Richarlison's goals would be a significant gamble, especially with the new season approaching.

Key Takeaways from De Zerbi's Comments

• Richarlison's future is undecided - He has given conflicting signals about staying or leaving.
• De Zerbi values him highly - Calls him a "lovely guy" and a hard worker.
• Goals are hard to replace - His 12-goal season is not easily replicated by unproven players.
• Contract situation is critical - With under a year left, Spurs face a decision on selling or extending.

What's Next for Tottenham and Richarlison?

With pre-season continuing and the transfer window open, Spurs fans will watch closely for any developments. De Zerbi's comments suggest the door remains open for Richarlison to stay, but the player's own uncertainty could force the club's hand. If a suitable offer arrives, Tottenham may need to weigh the financial benefits against losing a proven scorer.

For now, Richarlison's match-winning performance in Sydney serves as a reminder of his value. Whether he stays or goes, his contribution to the team's pre-season momentum is undeniable.
