Deadpool has long been the irreverent jester of the Marvel universe, but as the MCU enters a new era, questions arise about whether the Merc with a Mouth needs to mature. In Deadpool & Wolverine, the character lampooned the system from the outside, yet a sequel demands evolution. The film earned $1.3bn globally, but it did nothing to integrate Deadpool into the main MCU timeline. Now, with reports of a follow-up and a role in Avengers: Doomsday, the big question looms: can Deadpool stop joking and become a true hero?
The Problem with Deadpool in the MCU
Deadpool's fourth-wall-breaking antics have always set him apart from traditional superheroes. In Marvel's sanitised universe, characters like Thor and Spider-Man follow clear arcs, while Deadpool exists as a sarcastic observer. Shawn Levy's 2024 film chose to mock the system rather than fix it, leaving Deadpool as a resident heckler rather than a vital cog. How can he now become the saviour of Marvel when he has systematically pulled the enterprise apart?

Comparing Deadpool to Traditional MCU Heroes
| Aspect | Deadpool | Traditional Hero (e.g., Captain America) |
|---|---|---|
| Approach to violence | Excessive, comedic | Controlled, heroic |
| Fourth-wall breaking | Constant, meta | None |
| Humor style | R-rated, irreverent | Family-friendly, witty |
| Character growth | Minimal, often regresses | Clear arcs and sacrifice |
The table highlights why Deadpool struggles to fit in. While traditional heroes evolve, Deadpool remains static. For him to matter in Avengers: Secret Wars, he must embrace sacrifice over sarcasm.
Key Takeaways for Deadpool's Future
- Deadpool needs a character arc that moves beyond jokes.
- His role in Avengers: Doomsday must integrate him into the team.
- A serious sacrifice could redeefine his legacy in the MCU.
- Ryan Reynolds must balance humor with emotional depth.
- The sequel must avoid repetitive meta-commentary.
FAQ
Will Deadpool join the Avengers?
Currently, Deadpool is not an official Avenger. However, reports suggest he may appear in Avengers: Doomsday. His integration depends on whether Marvel decides to make him a team player.
Is Deadpool & Wolverine canon to the MCU?
The film is set in the MCU multiverse but takes place largely outside the main timeline. It is considered canon as a separate branch, but its direct impact on Earth-616 is minimal.
What is the future of Deadpool in Marvel?
A sequel is in development, and Deadpool may play a key role in upcoming Avengers films. If he matures, he could become a central figure; if not, he may remain a side character.
The path forward for Deadpool in the MCU is uncertain but promising. Ryan Reynolds has the talent to evolve the character beyond jokes, but it requires Marvel to take a risk. If they succeed, Deadpool could become the heart of the next superhero saga. If not, he'll stay the clown—entertaining, but never a true Marvel superhero.
