Ian McKellen Stars in Mixed Reality Play An Ark UK Premiere 2026

Ian McKellen is set to star in the UK premiere of An Ark, a groundbreaking mixed reality play coming to Manchester next spring. But audiences won't see the veteran actor in person—instead, they'll wear smart glasses that project his virtual presence into the room.

What Is Mixed Reality Theatre?

Mixed reality (MR) blends virtual elements with the physical world, unlike virtual reality (VR) which replaces your surroundings entirely. In An Ark, theatregoers don smart glasses that overlay digital actors onto the real stage. John McGrath, CEO of Factory International, explains: "Mixed reality is when you see both the virtual elements of an experience and also the real world around you." This technology allows for a seamless integration of live performance and digital innovation.

How An Ark Works

The 47-minute production, described as an exploration of life and death, will run at Aviva Studios from 27 March to 10 April. Audience members wear lightweight glasses that project actors like Ian McKellen into the space, creating an immersive experience without the actors being physically present. McGrath adds, "These glasses project into the space but also show the real world you are in." This approach differs from traditional VR, where goggles block out reality.

Ian McKellen's Virtual Role

At 85, McKellen continues to push boundaries. While he won't perform in person, his digital avatar will be central to the play. McGrath notes, "His virtual presence will be there. He may well come and visit the play but you won't see the real Ian McKellen performing." This raises questions about the nature of live performance and whether audiences will embrace a play without physical actors.

Audience Expectations and Value

McGrath compares the experience to cinema: "When people go to see a film, you don't spend time explaining the lead actors in the film won't be in the cinema. This is no different." He believes audiences will be satisfied with the virtual performance, especially given the novelty and immersive quality of mixed reality.
