Indian celebrities are facing fierce backlash for their silence during the massive Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests, where hundreds of thousands of students are demanding accountability over exam paper leaks. The movement, which has forced the resignation of India's education minister, has exposed a growing disconnect between Bollywood stars and their most devoted fans. Protesters like Vijay Rai, who traveled 2,000km to join the sit-in, accuse celebrities of cowardice: “We made them famous and wealthy—now when we need a little help, we get nothing.”
Why Are Indian Celebrities Staying Silent?
While many Bollywood actors and sports figures have spoken out on global issues like climate change or international tragedies, they have remained conspicuously quiet about the CJP protests in Delhi. Organizers note that even a simple social media post of support would be welcome, yet none have come. This selective activism has ignited accusations of hypocrisy, especially as protesters endure scorching heat, monsoon rains, and police brutality—including baton charges and tear gas—without any public solidarity from the stars.

The Cost of Silence
The protests began on 20 June after a May exam paper leak forced 2 million students to resit a crucial test, leading to more than a dozen suicides. The CJP’s indefinite sit-in has already achieved one major victory: the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the first time a top Modi ally has been ousted by public pressure. Yet celebrities remain detached. Fans argue that the same stars who rushed to comment on global tragedies are now turning a blind eye to the suffering of their own fanbase.
Comparison of Celebrity Reactions: Global vs. Domestic Issues
| Issue | Celebrity Reaction | Public Perception |
|---|---|---|
| Global tragedies (e.g., war, climate) | Vocal support on social media | Praised for awareness |
| Domestic student protests (CJP) | Complete silence | Seen as cowardly and out of touch |
| Police brutality against protesters | No statements | Further angers protesters |
This table highlights the stark contrast in celebrity engagement. While fans have long supported Bollywood by buying tickets and merchandise, they now demand reciprocity. Seema, a housecleaner in Delhi, told reporters: “Just a few words of moral support would have been enough. But we got nothing.”
