Nostalgia review: Andrei Tarkovsky's 1983 film is a deeply mysterious cine-poem about alienation and belonging. The title captures a yearning not just for a lost place but for something more profound. In this article, we explore its themes, symbolism, and lasting cinematic impact.
Tarkovsky's Vision of Alienation
Set against the stunning backdrop of Italy, the film follows a Russian scholar named Andrei (Oleg Yankovskiy) who is researching the life of a fictional composer. His journey becomes a meditation on exile and longing. The movie's slow, imagist style challenges viewers to look beyond narrative and embrace pure poetry.

Symbolism and Cinematography
Tarkovsky uses water, mist, and crumbling architecture to evoke a sense of dislocation. The famous scene of birds flying from a statue's breast underscores the spiritual turmoil of the characters. The black-and-white dream sequences contrast with the earthy color palette of Italy, reinforcing the inner conflict.
