Prophets Review: A Mysterious Tale of Faith at World's End 2026

In this Prophets review, we delve into Jack MacGregor's latest play, a mysterious tale of faith at the end of the world, now showing at the Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh. The play opens on the fictional island of Saint John, a British Overseas Territory in the South Pacific, where a Scottish researcher named Kerris arrives to study plant life but soon becomes entangled in the islanders' apocalyptic religious fervor.

Plot Overview: Faith and Mystery on Saint John

Kerris, played by Rebecca Wilkie, is welcomed by Joe, a former merchant seaman portrayed by Xander Cowan. She quickly senses something amiss in the nightly church services led by an elusive figure known as the prophet. While her scientific work focuses on the dawn of time, the locals are preparing for the end of days. This setup promises a gripping exploration of faith, colonialism, and cult dynamics.

MacGregor's Political Undertones

MacGregor's writing often ventures into global political territories, and Prophets is no exception. The play hints at a cover-up behind the slow-moving administrative machinery of the British empire, compounding the impression of an out-of-control cult taking its lead from a rewritten Bible. However, as the story unfolds, the real drama seems to lie elsewhere.

Character Depth and Performance

Rebecca Wilkie delivers a compelling performance as Kerris, but her backstory remains hazy. We learn she has a personal interest in charismatic religious leaders, yet the trauma she experienced in Scotland is only fleetingly revealed. This distance keeps the audience at one remove from the cult's inner workings, limiting emotional engagement.

Direction and Staging

Directed by Fraser Scott, the production is well-acted and visually engaging. The multitasking Xander Cowan adds depth to his role, but the script's focus on external observation rather than internal exploration leaves the play feeling shallow in its critique of why people join such groups.

Comparison with Other End-of-Days Plays

Key Takeaways from the Play

• Strong performances and direction elevate the material.
• The play raises intriguing questions about faith and colonialism.
• However, it fails to delve deeply into the psychological appeal of cults.
• The ending delivers an uncontroversial message that cults are harmful.
• Recommended for fans of thought-provoking theatre, but not MacGregor's best work.

FAQ

In conclusion, Prophets offers a mysterious and well-acted evening, but its potential is undercut by a lack of depth in exploring the very faith it critiques. For those interested in theatre that tackles big ideas, this is a worthy watch, though it may leave you wanting more.
