In Reality Awaits, The Strokes deliver their best album in years, merging mayhem and melody into a cohesive masterpiece. This seventh album, their first in six years, sees Julian Casablancas finally fusing the experimental energy of his side project The Voidz with the minimalist pop perfection that defined the band's early work. The result is a record that feels both familiar and thrillingly new.
The Voidz Influence on Reality Awaits
To understand this album, you have to appreciate Casablancas' other band. The Voidz have allowed him to explore warbling Auto-Tune, proggy structures, and lyrical absurdity—all of which surface on Reality Awaits. Tracks like “Going to Babble On” showcase his sweetest melodies, while “John Legend and Josh Groban” finds him screaming about fame with comic fury.

- “John Legend and Josh Groban” – Hilariously incomprehensible lyrics that somehow land.
- Production – Raw but polished, allowing each instrument to breathe.
Why This Album Matters
For fans who abandoned the band after First Impressions of Earth, Reality Awaits is a redemption arc. It proves that Casablancas can still write hooks that rival their early work, while also taking risks that keep the music alive. This is not nostalgia—it’s evolution.
