Tony Livesey Leaves BBC After David Sullivan Allegations 2026

Tony Livesey, a prominent BBC radio presenter, has left the broadcaster following allegations about his past role at David Sullivan's Sport newspapers. The allegations, which emerged from a BBC Panorama investigation, have cast a shadow over Livesey's 16-year tenure at BBC 5 Live. This article examines the details of the controversy, the implications for media accountability, and the broader context of workplace ethics in journalism.

The Allegations Against David Sullivan and Tony Livesey

The BBC Panorama investigation accused David Sullivan, the billionaire co-owner of West Ham United, of sexually exploitative and predatory behavior towards women over several decades. Sullivan has categorically denied all complaints through his lawyers. The investigation also raised questions about Tony Livesey's involvement, with one alleged victim stating that Livesey arranged a meeting between her and Sullivan.

Livesey's Response and Departure

Livesey, 62, has said he has "no recollection" of introducing the young woman to Sullivan and that it was "not part" of his job to do so. He also claimed he had "practically zero" contact with female models appearing in the paper. However, a 1998 book by Livesey described a "countdown to 16" feature, which counted down to models' 16th birthdays when they could be pictured topless legally. Livesey now says the feature was "categorically" not his idea and that parts of his book were "fictionalised."

In a message to BBC staff, Heidi Dawson, controller of 5 Live, confirmed that Livesey had decided to leave his presenting role. She praised his contributions, including his coverage of Brexit and major sporting events. Despite this, the allegations have proven too significant for Livesey to continue in his position.

Media Ethics and Accountability

This case highlights the importance of ethical conduct in journalism and the consequences of past actions resurfacing. It also raises questions about the culture at tabloid newspapers in the 1990s and the treatment of young women in the industry. The BBC's handling of the situation demonstrates a commitment to upholding standards, even for long-serving staff.
