Ukraine's Khyzhak Brigade: Life or Death Highway Photo Essay 2026

The Khyzhak brigade defends Donetsk's H20 highway, a critical supply route where drone warfare turns every movement into a life-or-death gamble. This photo essay captures their daily struggle against Russian FPV drones.

Life on the 'Road of Death'

The H20 highway connects Kramatorsk to Kostyantynivka, serving as the last lifeline for Ukrainian forces. Known as the 'road of life' or 'road of death,' it is constantly targeted by Russian drones. The brigade's mobile firing crews, like Dzhango's team, stand watch to shoot down these threats.

Dzhango, a shooter, prepares in a dugout before each shift, loading magazines and brushing his teeth. His team's mission is simple: protect the road and its users from aerial attacks. The constant presence of drones makes every second tense.

The Reality of Drone Warfare

Drone warfare is deadly simple – everything that moves on the road becomes a target. The road bears scars from FPV drones and cluster munitions, with burned vehicles lining the path. A ground robot returns from logistic missions, adding to the surreal landscape.

For the crew, shooting down a drone is a triumph. Dzhango celebrates with shouts of 'Easy peasy lemon squeezy!' after a successful hit. But the danger is ever-present; photographers and soldiers must stay under cover to avoid becoming targets themselves.
