Menopause supplements costing more than £400 a year are no better than a £22-a-year multivitamin, according to a new analysis by the consumer watchdog Which?. The research reveals that many popular supplements aimed at women over 45 going through menopause or perimenopause lack meaningful quantities of key nutrients, yet cost 20 times more than standard multivitamins.

The global menopause supplement market is valued at nearly $17bn and is expected to reach $25bn by 2030, as women seek ways to manage symptoms such as hot flushes, poor sleep, and mood swings. However, Which? found that none of the supplements it studied contained the correct nutrients in the right doses to support their use for menopause.

Which? Investigation Exposes Menopause Supplement Industry

Shefalee Loth, a public health nutritionist at Which? who co-led the research, said: “Which? is concerned that the supplements industry has become a wild west and regulators are not doing enough to get a grip on dubious marketing and unchecked quasi-medical claims from firms apparently seeking to cash in on people’s health anxiety and insecurities.”

The watchdog’s nutritionists examined the ingredients and prices of several popular menopause supplements, comparing them with a standard multivitamin. They found that many products contained only token amounts of key nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and iron—far below the levels needed to have any therapeutic effect.

Key Nutrients for Menopause and Perimenopause

Calcium and vitamin D are the most important nutrients during perimenopause and menopause as they support bone health as oestrogen levels decline. Maintaining good levels of iron, magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals can also help with symptoms. Yet, the analysis showed that many expensive supplements fail to provide these nutrients in effective doses.

For example, a £40-a-month supplement might contain only 10% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium, while a £22-a-year multivitamin could provide 100% of the RDA of several key nutrients. This means women are paying a premium for products that are unlikely to deliver the promised benefits.

Comparison: Expensive Menopause Supplements vs. Standard Multivitamin

Product Annual Cost Key Nutrients (RDA %) Effectiveness for Menopause
Popular Menopause Supplement £480 Calcium 10%, Vitamin D 5%, Magnesium 15% No better than placebo
Standard Multivitamin £22 Calcium 100%, Vitamin D 100%, Magnesium 50% Supports bone health and general wellbeing

As the table shows, the standard multivitamin provides significantly more of the key nutrients at a fraction of the cost. This raises serious questions about the marketing claims made by menopause supplement companies.

What Women Should Know Before Buying Menopause Supplements

  • Check the label: Look for the actual amounts of key nutrients, not just the presence of exotic ingredients.
  • Compare with a multivitamin: A basic multivitamin often provides better value and more reliable nutrient levels.
  • Consult a healthcare professional: Before spending money on expensive supplements, speak to your doctor or a registered nutritionist.
  • Focus on diet: A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium can help manage menopause symptoms.
  • Be wary of marketing hype: Claims like “clinically proven” or “doctor-formulated” may not be backed by robust evidence.

The menopause supplement industry is largely unregulated, and companies can make bold claims without providing proof. Which? is calling for tighter regulation to protect consumers from misleading marketing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are menopause supplements a waste of money?

According to Which?, many menopause supplements are no better than a cheap multivitamin. They often lack the necessary nutrients in effective doses, making them a poor investment. However, some women may still find relief from certain supplements, so it’s best to consult a healthcare professional.

What nutrients are important during menopause?

Calcium and vitamin D are crucial for bone health as oestrogen levels decline. Iron, magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals can also help manage symptoms like fatigue and mood swings. A balanced diet and a standard multivitamin can often meet these needs.

How can I manage menopause symptoms without expensive supplements?

Focus on a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress-reduction techniques can also help. If symptoms are severe, consult a doctor about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other treatments.

In conclusion, women going through menopause should be cautious about expensive supplements that promise miraculous results. A £22-a-year multivitamin may provide the same or better nutritional support than products costing over £400. Always check the evidence and consult a healthcare professional before spending money on dubious menopause supplements.
