Colombia Farmer Fights Mining to Protect Water Sources 2026

In the rural hamlet of Palo Cabildo in Colombia's western Andes, 87-year-old farmer Porfirio Garcés has become a symbol of the fight to protect water sources from mining. His peaceful resistance against the Quebradona copper mining project, promoted by multinational AngloGold Ashanti, has turned him into a nature hero in the Antioquia region.

The Fight to Protect Water Sources in Jericó

Garcés lives in Jericó, a town where numerous water sources originate, supplying not only his community but also several neighbouring towns. A sign on his porch reads "Yes to water," reflecting his deep connection to the land. "We don't want to wake to the roar of machinery drilling into and destroying our land, destroying the poetry of the landscape," he says. "We must defend our water sources. Without water, we will die of thirst."

The Jericó 11: Environmental Defenders Under Fire

Since last year, Garcés and 10 other local farmers have faced formal charges for opposing the Quebradona copper mining project. This group, known as the Jericó 11, has become a focal point for social protests. In August, demonstrations gained strength as nature defenders awaited new court hearings. The hearings have been postponed until March 2027, but the movement continues to grow.

Why Oppose the Quebradona Mining Project?

The Quebradona project, led by Minera de Cobre Quebradona (a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti), aims to extract copper and other minerals from the region. Local farmers argue that the mining operations would contaminate and deplete the water sources that are vital for agriculture and daily life. The project has sparked a broader debate about the trade-offs between economic development and environmental conservation in Colombia.
