UK Government Quietly Drops England Wildfire Plan 2026

The UK government quietly dropped a plan to prepare England for wildfires, despite record-breaking blazes this summer. The scrapped programme, part of the third national climate adaptation programme, was meant to run from 2023 to 2027 but was never implemented. This revelation comes as fire crews lack proper protective gear and the countryside turns into a tinderbox due to punishing heat and dry weather.

What Was the Wildfire Risk Programme?

In July 2023, the Conservative government under Rishi Sunak pledged to run a wildfire risk programme in England. The aim was to adapt land management to the growing threat of wildfires. However, freedom of information requests revealed that the commitment “was made by the previous government but was not brought into effect.” The programme was quietly shelved, leaving England unprepared for the increasing risk of wildfires.

Why Was It Scrapped?

The government has not provided a clear explanation. Campaigners argue that the decision reflects a lack of attention to wildfire risks until Britain literally burned this summer. The programme’s cancellation highlights a broader pattern of neglecting climate adaptation measures.

The Rising Threat of Wildfires in England

This summer, the UK experienced record-breaking wildfires after hot, dry weather turned large parts of the countryside into a tinderbox. In August, a wildfire spread across an area including several homes in Stourbridge, West Midlands. Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened an emergency Cobra meeting and issued a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues. These events underscore the urgent need for preparedness.

Fire Crews Lack Protective Gear

New data shows that fire crews do not have the proper protective gear to tackle wildfires. Without adequate equipment, firefighters are at greater risk, and their ability to control fires is compromised. The scrapped programme would have addressed these gaps.

Comparing Wildfire Preparedness: UK vs. Other Countries

England lags behind other nations in wildfire preparedness. The table below compares key aspects of wildfire management in the UK, Australia, and the US.

Key Takeaways

• The government scrapped a critical wildfire risk programme for England.
• Fire crews lack proper protective gear to fight wildfires.
• Record-breaking wildfires this summer highlighted the danger.
• Campaigners call the decision “appalling” and demand action.
• England trails other countries in wildfire preparedness.

What Needs to Happen Now?

Environmental campaigner Guy Shrubsole, who obtained the information, said it was “appalling” that the government “couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to wildfire risks until jolted into doing so by Britain burning this summer.” Immediate steps include reinstating the wildfire risk programme, equipping fire crews with proper gear, and raising public awareness. Long-term strategies must integrate climate adaptation into land management.
