The US-Saudi uranium enrichment deal signed by Donald Trump allows Saudi Arabia to enrich its own uranium, raising significant nuclear nonproliferation concerns. The agreement, signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, includes a peaceful nuclear cooperation pact and bilateral safeguards. This 30-year deal could involve US firms like Westinghouse in developing Saudi nuclear infrastructure, potentially including a uranium enrichment facility after a joint study.
Geopolitical Context of the Uranium Enrichment Deal
The timing is controversial as the US fights Iran to prevent Tehran from enriching uranium domestically. Critics argue this deal undermines that effort. Saudi Arabia has previously stated it would seek nuclear weapons if Iran acquired them, though Iran denies such intent. The agreement likely lacks the IAEA's additional protocol for enhanced monitoring that Iran was subjected to under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Key Provisions and Congressional Review
The plan will be submitted to Congress, where lawmakers may oppose it due to insufficient safeguards. Past Biden administration efforts conditioned Saudi access on normalizing relations with Israel, which Saudi Arabia still refuses. The US also feared Riyadh would turn to other nations for nuclear technology if denied.
| Aspect | US-Saudi Deal | Iran 2015 Deal |
|---|---|---|
| Uranium enrichment allowed | Yes, for Saudi Arabia | Limited, with restrictions |
| IAEA monitoring | Standard safeguards | Additional protocol |

Risks and Expert Warnings
Rosemary Kelanic of Defense Priorities warned that giving Saudi Arabia enrichment technology is a terrible idea. The lack of enhanced monitoring could enable covert weapons development. The deal also risks a regional nuclear arms race, with Saudi Arabia potentially matching Iran's capabilities.
- Proliferation risk: Saudi enrichment could lead to nuclear weapons.
- Geopolitical tension: Undermines US stance against Iran's enrichment.
- Congressional opposition: Lawmakers fear inadequate safeguards.
- IAEA oversight: Missing additional protocol weakens inspections.
Future Implications for Energy and Security
The deal could reshape Middle East energy dynamics, giving Saudi Arabia civilian nuclear power while raising global security questions. US firms may benefit economically, but the long-term strategic costs are uncertain. The agreement's approval depends on Congress and international pressure.
